BL Bulletin #14 - 10th January 2023
Happy Tuesday all!

I hope you've all had a fantastic break, and are ready for another great year at Barts and The London!

There is already so much going on, including RAG and Society events, and as some of you may know one of our founding hospitals is turning 900 this year so we have loads planned to celebrate (including a new limited edition range of clothing, guest speakers, and a huge celebration event to look forward to in April).

Many of you may have seen that the BMA is now balloting for Junior Doctor Industrial Action, and I wanted to take this opportunity to show my full support to any Doctors looking to strike in the coming weeks. The BLSA is fully behind you, and we'll be doing events in the coming weeks on both social media and on campus to show our support. Good luck!

Other than that, please do come in for a coffee or lunch at the Griff and come and find me on the top floor if you need anything, or drop me an email!

BL Love,

Charlie Sellar

Joke(s) of the week
I can't believe I got fired from the Calendar factory!
All I did was take a day off!
This weeks Champion is Mashael Ishaque, for their incredible work as President of the 'Friends of MSF' Society! Their nominator had this to say about them:
[Mashael] brings a huge amount of passion and enthusiasm to the society, and has hosted some amazing events, from language workshops to inviting special guests.
BL Friends of MSF Society are supporters of the largest medical humanitarian aid organisation, and provide an opportunity for students to learn more about getting involved in Humanitarian work.

What's BLSA been up to?
  • The BLSA has now secured Rites of Passage at St Pauls until 2030.
  • The BLSA has been working on a restructure, to better represent students. This also ties in with preparations for the upcoming Spring elections, when next year's BLSA Board will be voted in.
  • The BLSA President, VP London, and the Clinical Rep met with the BMA Reps in order to understand how the BLSA can assist in balloting, and what resources would be provided to students during periods of Industrial Action
  • The BLSA Welfare Officers have been working on improving hardship funding from the SU, including conference funding, as well as working on Report and Support, and the upcoming SHAG week.

Celebrating Ignác Semmelweis - ‘The Saviour of Mothers'
Wed 10th 2-4pm, Perrin LT

You are invited to join Queen Mary University of London and Embassy of Hungary in London at a celebratory event commemorating the 204th anniversary of the birth of Dr Ignác Semmelweis, a 19th century Hungarian obstetrician who recognised that handwashing before examining mothers in labour can prevent childbed fever. He pioneered antiseptic procedures which lead to the subsequent significant reduction of mortality at obstetric wards.
We are delighted to be joined by Sir Mark Rylance, a prominent British actor, playwright and theatre director, who will read a a short excerpt from his recent play Dr Semmelweis. Headlining at Bristol's Old Vic the play explores the struggle of the Hungarian physician to convince the medical establishment about the value of his findings.
